The William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology & Office of State Archaeology supports university teaching and student learning through collections-based instruction, facility tours, guest lectures, research support, internships, and project-based collaborations.
WSWMA & OSA works with instructors and academic programs at the University of Kentucky and, when possible, with instructors from other institutions to connect students with archaeological collections, museum practice, archaeological records, public archaeology, cultural heritage stewardship, and the broader discipline of anthropology.
Instructional support may include:
- Facility tours for university classes
- Guest lectures on Kentucky archaeology, museum collections, OSA records, cultural resource management, public archaeology, or collections stewardship
- Collections-based teaching support
- Object-based learning activities
- Support for digital exhibit or interpretation assignments
- Guidance for student research projects
- Internship, practicum, or independent study opportunities
- Introduction to archaeological site records, curation, and professional documentation
- Support for courses involving anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, historic preservation, geography, GIS, archives, or heritage science
Requests should be submitted as early as possible. Availability depends on staff schedules, facility access, collections needs, course goals, and the nature of the proposed activity.
Student Engagement
Students play an important role in the work of WSWMA & OSA. Through internships, class projects, research experiences, collections work, archival projects, digital documentation, and public programs, students gain practical experience with archaeological collections, records, interpretation, and public service.
These opportunities support the University of Kentucky’s teaching mission while helping prepare students for careers in archaeology, museums, anthropology, historic preservation, cultural resource management, education, archives, and related fields.
